Constitutional Affairs Bureau's response to press enquiries |
|
In response to press enquiries, a spokesman for the
Constitutional Affairs Bureau said, "In accordance with the
Basic Law and the Chief Executive Election Ordinance, the
incumbent Chief Executive (CE) may seek re-election once. In
the Second Term CE Election conducted in 2002, Mr Tung
Chee-hwa, the then CE, sought re-election whilst continuing to
perform the duties as a CE. Whilst the CE is in Hong Kong, he
has to fulfill the duties prescribed by the Basic Law and
should not take leave in a casual manner. The above
arrangements are in line with the requirements of the Basic
Law and local legislation."
