Speech by SCMA at "International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination" activity

Following is the speech by the Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Mr Patrick Nip, at an activity of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination this afternoon (March 10):

Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

I wish to thank the Equal Opportunities Commission and RTHK for organising today's event to celebrate the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Ethnic minorities are very much part of the Hong Kong community.  Hong Kong is thankful to all of them who have played important roles in shaping our history as well as developing our future.  Hong Kong’s international and cosmopolitan characteristics are built on embracing cultural diversity and racial harmony.  As announced in the 2018-19 Budget, the Chief Secretary for Administration will set up a steering committee to co-ordinate, review and monitor the support work and services for ethnic minorities.  A total of $500 million will also be earmarked to strengthen support for ethnic minorities.  I believe continued efforts by all will definitely help build a flourishing community that celebrates unity in diversity.

     Thank you!
