|Government's response on Legco Panel's motion
In response to media enquiries concerning the mode of implementing universal suffrage for the Legislative Council (Legco) and the motion put forth by the Legco Constitutional Affairs Panel today (May 19), a Government spokesman has responded as follows:
"The priority of the HKSAR Government is to work out the electoral methods for returning the Chief Executive and the Legislative Council for 2012 in accordance with the Decision of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress last December.
"As regards the long-term arrangement for implementation of universal suffrage for returning the Legislative Council and the abolition or retention of functional constituencies, as there are still diverse views in the community, the matter will need to be discussed and considered carefully. The implementation of universal suffrage for the Legislative Council would be dealt with by the Chief Executive to be elected in 2017. Therefore, at this stage, we cannot draw a final conclusion regarding the mode of implementing universal suffrage for the Legislative Council."
