| Government responds to enquiries on CE election |

In response to media enquiries on the Chief Executive (CE) election arrangements, a spokesman for the Constitutional Affairs Bureau said the following today (March 12):
"It has been clearly stated in the electoral legislation that votes shall be cast by secret ballot. The electoral law has also provided sufficient safeguards to protect the secrecy of votes. The CE election will be held in accordance with the Basic Law and the relevant electoral legislation, and in an open, fair and honest manner." The spokesman said, "As in other elections, no mark or number will be printed on the ballot papers for the CE election. As a matter of fact, if any one has put on any writing or mark on the ballot paper by which the elector can possibly be identified, the ballot paper shall not be regarded as valid in the counting of votes."
