| SCA calls on all to know more about Basic Law |

Over the past 15 years, the Basic Law has helped Hong Kong resolve a problem left by history, maintained the various systems in Hong Kong and provided scope for new developments, the Secretary for Constitutional Affairs, Mr Stephen Lam, said at the opening ceremony of a carnival to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the promulgation of the Basic Law today (May 28).
He said that under the Basic Law, Hong Kong had maintained its connections with the international arena. Hong Kong had continued to be a member of international organisations. After the Mainland' s accession to the World Trade Organisation, Hong Kong and the Mainland could make free trade agreements, known as Mainland and Hong Kong Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA). "We have put particular emphasis on promoting the Basic Law, amongst the younger generation and have allocated a provision of over $7 million this year for promotional activities to tie in with the 15th anniversary of the promulgation of the Basic Law," Mr Lam said. Since the reunification, the HKSAR Government has all along endeavoured to promote the Basic Law. Given that this year marks the 15th anniversary of the promulgation of the Basic Law, the Government will put in more resources for organising a host of activities. The purpose is to promote to the public, in particular the younger generation, the drafting background and implementation of the Basic Law through various channels. The carnival held at the Piazza, Kowloon Park, was organised by the Basic Law Promotion Steering Committee. There were 28 stall games for participants to learn more about the Basic Law through interesting ways. They were designed, decorated and run by over 200 secondary school students entered into the Basic Law Game Booth Design Competition. The winning team for the best game booth award is King's College. The first runner- up is Yuen Long PMSSA Tang Siu Tong Secondary School and the second runner-up is ELCHK Lutheran Secondary School. The best decorated booth award goes to King's College; the first runner-up is Methodist Lee Wai Lee College and the second runner-up is Yuen Long PMSSA Tang Siu Tong Secondary School In addition, an extravaganza to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the promulgation of the Basic Law was held at the Kowloon Park sports centre in late afternoon. Performances included singing by canto-pop singers, strings music, short comedy, and a telematch. Performers included popular artistes, members from a "wushu" troupe and primary school students. The highlights of the extravaganza will be broadcast on the Entertainment Channel of Cable TV from 8pm to 9.30pm on May 30; ATV-Home from 11.50pm on June 2 to 01.20am on June 3; and the Chinese station of Phoenix TV at date and time to be announced. It will also be aired on RTHK Radio 2 from 5pm to 6pm on June 5. The radio station will have it broadcast on web (www.rthk.org.hk) from 8pm to 9.30pm on May 30. Ends/Saturday, May 28, 2005 |
