| Commencement of Legislative Council's third term of office |

In accordance with Section 4 of the Legislative Council Ordinance, the Chief Executive-in-Council has specified October 1, 2004, as the commencement date for the third term of office of the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (third term LegCo).
"Section 4(5) of the ordinance stipulates that the commencement date of each term of office of LegCo must be within 30 days after the date on which the results of the general election to elect the Members for the relevant term of office are declared," a government spokesman said today (June 15). "The general elections for the third term LegCo are scheduled for September 12, 2004, and on current plans, the election results will be declared on September 13, 2004. Hence, the latest commencement date of the third term LegCo is October 12, 2004." "The second term LegCo will end on September 30, 2004. Commencing the third term LegCo on October 1, 2004, will ensure that the LegCo's term of office ends and commences on a back-to-back basis," the spokesman added.
