The Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Mr Stephen Lam, visited CNEC Christian College this afternoon (December 16) to gain a first-hand understanding of the teaching and education situation at the school.
The government-aided Christian school, with more than 1,200 students, was among the first batch of schools allowed to use English as the medium of instruction in 1998. Mr Lam met the Principal, Mr Ngai Shu-chiu, to learn about the school's curriculum and activities.
Mr Lam then presented prizes to the winners of the Form Two inter-class Putonghua advertisement competition. To promote biliteracy and trilingualism, the school has in recent years stepped up the usage of Putonghua and has made it the medium of instruction for Chinese-language subjects in the junior forms.
Mr Lam next proceeded to meet around 600 Form Four to Seven students. He recalled the different stages of constitutional development in Hong Kong and shared with them his observations of developments in the Mainland in recent years. The student representatives asked him how he handled the difficulties and challenges at work. Mr Lam encouraged the students to strive for their best in pursuing their studies, so that they could face up to challenges in the future.
