Government to assist integration of ethnic minorities (with photos)

The Government will continue to assist the integration of ethnic minorities into the community, the Under Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Miss Adeline Wong, said.

While visiting the Centre for Harmony and Enhancement of Ethnic Minority Residents (CHEER) in Kwun Tong, Miss Wong noted that the four support service centres for ethnic minorities funded by the Government had come into full operation to provide services to facilitate ethnic minorities to integrate into the community. These include telephone interpretation services to facilitate ethnic minorities in accessing public services. We also look forward to the further extension of the services of the centres to provide tutorial classes for ethnic minority students to assist them in their studies.

During her visit to the CHEER Centre, Miss Wong was first briefed on the operation of the centre, and then proceeded to visit a paper-cutting class for ethnic minority children to see their participation in the activities organised by the centre. Before concluding her visit, Miss Wong chatted with the interpreters providing telephone interpretation services in the centre to further understand the services provided for ethnic minorities.

Operated by the Hong Kong Christian Service, the CHEER Centre has commenced operation since September 2009. The Centre is one of the four support service centres for ethnic minorities funded by the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau and operated by non-governmental organisations to offer services and programmes for ethnic minorities to facilitate their integration into the community. The CHEER centre also provides interpretation and translation services, including free telephone interpretation service, to facilitate ethnic minorities in accessing public services.

Besides, the Government will allocate additional resources for the four centres to run after school tutorials to enhance the support for ethnic minority students in their study of the Chinese language and other subjects.

Ends/Sunday, December 6, 2009
