Interpretation service for ethnic minorities begins (with photos)

An interpretation service to facilitate ethnic minorities in accessing public services, provided under the funding grant of the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau, begins today (October 31).

The interpretation service is operated by the Hong Kong Christian Service as part of the services of their Centre for Harmony and Enhancement of Ethnic Minority Residents (CHEER). The service aims at facilitating members of ethnic minorities who do not have a good command of Chinese or English to communicate with the service organisations concerned. Seven ethnic minority languages/dialects are covered - Bahasa Indonesia, Hindi, Nepali, Punjabi, Tagalog, Thai and Urdu.

The interpretation service is mainly provided through telephone hotlines. The operating hours are from 8 am to 10 pm, Monday to Sunday except public holidays. The telephone interpretation service is provided free of charge. Ethnic minorities in need of the service may call the following hotlines during operating hours:

Bahasa Indonesia, Tagalog and Thai 3755 6811
Hindi and Nepali                   3755 6822
Punjabi and Urdu                   3755 6833

The centre also provides on-site interpretation service. This is a paid service provided on request by public service providers to aid their communications with members of the ethnic minorities.

For enquiries regarding the service in general, members of the public may also call the general enquiries hotline of the centre at 3106 3104. The centre is located at G/F, 5 Tsui Ping Road, Kwun Tong, Kowloon.

The CHEER Centre is one of the four support service centres for ethnic minorities funded by the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau and operated by non-governmental organisations.  The centres offer a number of programmes for ethnic minorities to facilitate their integration into the community. The programmes include English and Cantonese language classes, interest classes, counselling and referral services, and on-sight interpretation services.

Ends/Saturday, October 31, 2009
