SCMA visits a Tuen Mun secondary school (with photos)

The Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Mr Stephen Lam, visited the Caritas Tuen Mun Marden Foundation Secondary School this afternoon (May 26) to see the school life and learning environment of students.

Mr Lam first met the school’s Principal, Mr Chan Kwok-cheung, and representatives and was briefed on developments of the school. Mr Lam learned that the school started admitting ethnic minority (EM) students from the 2007-08 academic year. To coincide with this development, the school has organised various caring and integration activities to help EM students adapt to school life and learn  the Chinese language.

During a tour of the school premises, Mr Lam sat in a Form One Home Economics (HE) class and tried his hand at baking cookies with the students. He noted that the subject also taught students domestic hygiene and food safety, as well as the importance of healthy living and maintaining a balanced diet.

Mr Lam next enjoyed a performance by the school’s piano talent Lie Ning-yuen, a Form Four student who is also studying piano performance at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Noting that Lie would have to skip school when he competed overseas, Mr Lam appreciated the special arrangements made to enable the student to pursue his studies while developing his musical talent.

Mr Lam also observed some extra-curricular activities, including marching band and cricket training. The school’s marching band was formed in 2000 to cultivate the music sense and team spirit of students, and it helped strengthen their sense of belonging to the school. Cricket training, while being very popular among EM students, has provided a chance for local students to experience what is to them a new sport.

Before concluding his visit, Mr Lam shared his experiences in learning and in life with a study group comprising both local and EM students. Under the school’s “reading companion scheme”, local students  assist fellow EM students in learning the Chinese language as well as adapting to their school and the community. Mr Lam encouraged the students to help and learn from one another, and together share the joy of learning.
