SCMA visits Sai Kung District (with photos)

The Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Mr Stephen Lam, visited Sai Kung District this afternoon (February 23) to get an update on the district. He visited a secondary school, a community centre and an ethnic minority family. He also met with the Sai Kung District Council (DC) Members and local representatives to exchange views with them on a wide range of subjects.

Mr Lam first visited the HKMLC Queen Maud Secondary School at Hau Tak Estate, Tseung Kwan O. Apart from being briefed on how the school promoted national and civic education, he also engaged in a dialogue with students from different grades sharing their experiences in taking part in national education activities. The school has joined the National Education Student Ambassadors Training Scheme with the aim of encouraging students to gain a better understanding of the unique history and culture of China and latest developments on the Mainland through different perspectives.

Mr Lam next proceeded to Sheung Tak Estate to visit an ethnic minority family, who has been living in Hong Kong for a number of years, and listened to their account of the difficulties they had encountered in their daily lives. The family comprises parents and five children. Mr Lam said that to provide further assistance to ethnic minorities in using public services and to facilitate their integration into the community, the Government had reserved funding for non-governmental organisations to set up and operate four support service centres for ethnic minorities. These centres, expected to begin operation within this year, will provide telephone interpretation services and to organise various activities and language classes.

Mr Lam then visited an integrated youth services centre operating under the Sai Kung Rural Committee to learn about the wide range of services provided there. He took the opportunity to chat with some new arrival students to understand the difficulties they encountered in their studies. Mr Lam encouraged them to focus on their studies as well as take part in the centre's activities in order to broaden their horizons.

Before concluding his visit, Mr Lam met with Sai Kung DC members, including the Chairman, Mr Ng Sze-fuk, and the Vice-chairman, Mr Wan Yuet-kau, at the DC’s conference room and exchanged views with them on a wide range of issues.
