Adoption of review report on China by the UN Human Rights Council Universal Periodic Review Working Group (With photos)

The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) adopted the review report on China today (February 11).

The UPR Working Group held a hearing on February 9 to examine the report submitted by China (including the Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions). A team representing the HKSAR led by the Under Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Mr Raymond Tam, attended the hearing as part of China’s delegation. This was the first time that the HKSAR was reviewed by the UNHRC under the new UPR mechanism.

“The UNHRC Working Group has taken note of the commitment of and efforts made by the HKSAR Government in the promotion and protection of human rights in Hong Kong, and is generally satisfied with the human rights situation in the HKSAR.”

“While the Working Group has not raised any issues of concern regarding Hong Kong in the review report, the HKSAR Government will continue to promote and preserve the human rights and freedoms in Hong Kong in accordance with the Basic Law and relevant local legislation.” Mr Tam said.

The review report will be adopted by the plenary of the UNHRC in June this year.

Ends/Wednesday, February 11, 2009
