"Voters' participation and support is of utmost importance to ensure the success of an election," Chief Executive, Mr Tung Chee Hwa said at a ceremony in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre today (16 July), when he encouraged the three million voters to vote in the forthcoming Legislative Council (LegCo) elections this September.

The event, jointly officiated by Mr Tung, Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Anson Chan and other senior officials, marked the official commencement of the publicity programme for the LegCo elections in September. Amongst the senior officials attending the function included Secretary for Constitutional Affairs, Mr Michael Suen; Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Lam Woon-kwong and Chairman of the Electoral Affairs Commission, Mr Justice Woo Kwok-hing.

The Government is working vigorously to promote public participation at both the central and district levels, and will further intensify the publicity campaign to encourage people to vote in the lead up to the September poll.

Various publicity vehicles which have proven to be effective in the past, such as television and radio announcements of public interests, leaflets, pamphlets, celebrities' appeals, roving exhibitions and bus parades, will be used to drive home the election message.

Special efforts will be targetted at young voters. These include the launching of a website specially designed for the LegCo elections and promoting a clean election through the Internet.

The event ended with a parade by some 200 youngsters on bicycles, skate bikes and rollers to the LegCo Building in Central along the seafront.

Nomination for the LegCo elections will begin on July 20and end on August 2. The poll will take place on September 10. Of the 60 LegCo seats, 24 will be returned by geographical constituencies, 30 by functional constituencies and six by an Election Committee.
