Subsidy Rate of the Financial Assistance for Candidates and the Election Expense Limits for the 2008 Legislative Council Election

In response to media enquiries, a spokesman for the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau said that a paper had been issued today (April 11) to the Legislative Council (LegCo) Panel on Constitutional Affairs to consult Members on the proposals put forth by the HKSAR Government regarding the subsidy rate of the financial assistance scheme for candidates and the election expense limits for the 2008 LegCo Election.

The spokesman said that the HKSAR Government had proposed to increase the subsidy rate by 10% from $10 per vote to $11 per vote for the 2008 LegCo Election.

He added that as the election expense limits and the subsidy rate for the financial assistance scheme were related, based on the proposal that the subsidy rate for the financial assistance scheme would be increased by 10%, the HKSAR Government also proposed to increase the election expense limits for both geographical constituency (GC) and functional constituency (FC) elections by 5%, so that candidates would have more room within their election expense limits to promote their candidacy.
