Members of local design and building related professions are invited to participate in a competition to contribute concept designs for the development and construction of the Hong Kong Pavilion at the World Expo 2010 Shanghai China.
The "Concept Design Competition for the World Exposition 2010 Shanghai China -- Hong Kong Pavilion" is jointly organised by the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau and the Architectural Services Department, and sponsored by the Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA).
A Government spokesman today (February 1) said the Shanghai Expo, to be held in Shanghai from May 1 to October 31, 2010, would be another major international event to be hosted by China after the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
"Under the theme of 'Better City, Better Life', the Shanghai Expo will provide a platform for participating countries and organisations to exchange experiences of urban development, disseminate advanced ideas on cities, explore new approaches to eco-friendly lifestyles and working conditions, and sustainable development.
"The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region will take the opportunity to showcase to the Mainland and international visitors its strengths and attractions, including its quality city life, connectivity, sustainable development and position as a creative capital and cosmopolitan city," the spokesman said.
"The Government will construct a Hong Kong Pavilion with distinct Hong Kong characteristics under the theme of 'Hong Kong - A City with Unlimited Potential'.
"We want to highlight Hong Kong's achievements in sustainable urbanisation and show how its quality city life can be enhanced infinitely in a place with limited land resources to complement the theme of the Shanghai Expo," he said.
"The Hong Kong Pavilion to be built on a stand-alone site will form part of the China Pavilion. The competition will enable us to tap the best creative ideas of local professionals on its design," he said.
The competition is open to Hong Kong residents who are Full/Professional/Fellow Members of the HKIA, Hong Kong Designers Association, Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, Hong Kong Institute of Landscape Architects, Hong Kong Institute of Planners or Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors. Other Hong Kong residents can join the competition as part of a team led by the above-mentioned professionals who satisfy the entry requirements.
The competition is open to individuals or teams. Entries can be a collaborative effort representing the works of individuals or teams from the same or different professional disciplines.
The deadline for submission of entries is 6pm on March 13, 2008. The results will be announced in early April.
There will be five prizes as follows:
* First Prize (one entry): HK$200,000
* Second Prize (one entry): HK$30,000
* Honourable Mention (three entries): HK$10,000 each
The winning entries will be selected by a seven-member jury comprising the Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Henry Tang (Chairman); Mr Rocco Yim; Professor Edward Ng; Dr Allan Zeman; the Permanent Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Mr Joshua Law; the Director of Information Services, Mrs Betty Fung; and the Director of Architectural Services, Mr Yue Chi Hang.
