Following is the English portion of the transcript of the Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Mr Stephen Lam, speaking to the media after attending the Urban Open Forum on the Green Paper on Constitutional Development today (August 28):
Reporter: How do you find the outcome of this first open forum? What's you view of the opinion of not sure whether Hong Kong is mature enough...
Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs: I would say that according to the feedback we have received at this open forum today, it is very clear that the people of Hong Kong do wish to attain universal suffrage according to the Basic Law. It is also very true that the citizens of Hong Kong who took part in today's forum have given us various views, with all sorts of ideas being put forth. They fully realise that the critical issues which we need to deal with include the question of universal suffrage timetable, how we form and allow the nominating committee to operate, and how we deal with the future of functional constituencies. I would say that those who have taken part in today's open forum have made useful contribution to our discussion and debate.
