Third meeting of HK/Guangdong Co-operation Joint Conference

The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and the Guangdong Provincial Government held the third meeting of the Hong Kong/Guangdong Co-operation Joint Conference in Shenzhen today (September 25).

The two delegations were led by the Chief Secretary for Administration of the HKSAR, Mrs Anson Chan, and the Vice-Governor of the Guangdong Provincial Government, Mr Wang Qishan. The Deputy Director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, Mr Chen Zuo'er also attended the meeting.

Mr Wang extended a warm welcome to the HKSAR delegation at the meeting. Both sides reviewed the achievements made. On environmental protection, the Guangdong side presented to the meeting measures undertaken by the Guangdong Provincial Government in protecting Dongjiang water.

Other environmental issues discussed at the meeting included the improvement of air quality in the Pearl River Delta region, feasibility study on the proposal to harmonize diesel standards and protection of water quality in Deep Bay and Mirs Bay.

Both sides also reported progress made in the areas of tourism, extending operating hours of Shenzhen-Shekou passenger crossing, implementing a joint cheque clearance system between Hong Kong and Guangdong, the teacher exchange programme and linking up information networks between the two sides.

At the meeting, representatives of Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai also outlined the development of the three cities and their co-operation with Hong Kong.

In their closing remarks, both sides reaffirmed the achievement of co-operation between Hong Kong and Guangdong and would continue to explore possible and potential issues for furthering co-operation.
