After School Support for Ethnic Minorities
This project began in the 2004-05 school year,
when - for the first time - significant numbers
of minority children were enrolled in mainstream
schools where Chinese was the medium of instruction.
This group was the project's original 'clientele'
and they remained its first priority. But its
scope had since been extended to include all
minority schoolchildren and their parents.
Objective
We sponsored the Hong Kong Christian Service
in the 2004-06 school year, to implement the project. Its
principle objectives were to help minority children
and their parents to adapt to school life in Hong
Kong, through such means as language lessons and
assistance with homework. Priority was given to
those studying in Chinese medium schools. In concrete
terms, this entails -
- building a support network for parents of target students, so as to enable them to cope with their children's learning and adaptation needs;
- providing liaison services between schools and parents, including interpretation support to facilitate effective communication between them; and
- providing support services to teachers of target students to help them better understand the students' cultural background and to facilitate the cultivation of a culturally inclusive school environment.
