The Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Mr Patrick Nip, visited Tai Po District today (September 27) and toured a genome technology company in the Tai Po Industrial Estate and community education facilities in the district. He also met with members of the Tai Po District Council (TPDC) to exchange views on district matters.
Accompanied by the Chairman of the TPDC, Mr Cheung Hok-ming; the Vice Chairman of the TPDC, Ms Wong Pik-kiu; and the District Officer (Tai Po), Ms Andy Lui, Mr Nip visited BGI Tech Solutions (Hong Kong) Co Ltd in the Tai Po Industrial Estate and toured its laboratories.
At a briefing by the company, he was updated on the development of genome technology and the related scientific research industries. He said he was glad to learn that the company had installed some most advanced genome sequencing machines and obtained a number of international certifications, and was committed to developing Hong Kong as an international genome sequencing centre and a genome data processing centre, as well as a clinical research service centre.
The company's parent company is a life science research group on the Mainland. The Hong Kong branches of the group, which are based in the Tai Po Industrial Estate, have kept on expanding their businesses, highlighting Hong Kong's importance on the global medical and biotechnology map. Hong Kong's extensive international network and excellent professional services have also been instrumental in assisting the group to expand its overseas markets.
Mr Nip said, "In the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area, Hong Kong's edge in scientific research, coupled with the advantages of the Mainland in transforming research results into products, demonstrate that Hong Kong and the Mainland can attain complementary development and win-win results."
Mr Nip then visited the Tai Po Pun Chung Community Education Center to learn more about its facilities and services. He also had an exchange session with some newly arrived women to understand more about their lives in Hong Kong.
Mr Nip paid tribute to the Tai Po District Committee of the New Territories Association of Societies and the Tai Po District Federation of Women for organising activities in the Center to promote community education and lifelong learning, help the disadvantaged and provide community services.
After the visit, Mr Nip had a meeting with members of the TPDC to exchange views on district and social matters. He expressed gratitude to the members for their commitment in serving the public and for contributing to community building.
